Tradeoff and Solutions of Data Storage in Edge Computing

Edge computing is a novel computing paradigm that can improve the performance of many data intensive applications. Edge servers offer computing and data storage services closer to the locations of data sources. Data storage is an important issue in edge computing. Data need to be carefully allocated and stored in the system. In this paper, we investigate where to store data from data sources. We consider the scenario that data sources upload their data to edge servers or to the cloud. We show the impact of data storage and point out three goals, i.e., maximizing total data access frequencies supported by the edge server, minimizing total data uploading time, and maximizing the number of data sources uploading data to the edge server. We explore the tradeoff among these goals and propose different solutions. Performance evaluation shows these three goals can be achieved by our solutions respectively.
