Online Transient Stability Assessment employing Decision Tree and Maximal Lyapunov Exponent

This paper proposes a new integrated method for online transient stability assessment (TSA) of a power system utilizing the features of decision tree (DT) and maximal Lyapunov exponent (MLE) algorithms. The proposed method uses phasor measurement unit (PMU) data and performs TSA estimation in two stages. In the first stage, the first-swing stability and multi-swing stability cases are classified using DT. In the second-stage, the first-swing stability cases are evaluated using DT and multi-swing cases are checked using MLE for their stability/instability. The effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through simulations carried out on a standard test power system known as IEEJ WEST 10-machine model in Japan [20].
