Preparation and Application of Composite Material as Sorbent for Oil Spills

Oil spills are a serious environmental, economic and social problem. The use of sorbents derived from different materials is considered to be the most effective method for their removal. In this study, we obtained novel sorbent materials based on natural products: textile material made of cotton and modified with chitosan crosslinked with glutaraldehyde and in situ obtained ZnO particles. These composite materials have good sorption properties and are easy and effective to use and they remove crude oil and oil products contaminants in water. Their reusability has also been investigated.
