Parametric Study of Through Transmission Laser Welding using Particle Swarm Optimization

In this paper, Multi-objective particle swarm optimization is applied to obtain the optimal parametric condition for Through Transmission Laser Welding (TTLW) of two dissimilar transparent thermoplastics-acrylic and polycarbonate without using any filler material. The mathematical model for the responses is developed by Response Surface Methodology (RSM) using multiple regression analysis. ANOVA is used to analyze the effect of process parameters on the responses. Then, the regression equations for response parameters are optimized separately like (single-objective) and simultaneously (multi-objective). This study shows that, a nature-inspired meta-heuristic optimization process- multi-objective particle swarm optimization will efficiently find an optimal solution for laser welding on thermoplastics and can be a reliable alternative for traditional optimization method.
