Surface Roughness Analysis of POF Coupler Post Conditioning Processes and Its Impact on Small World Networks

The small world network idea as it has developed over the last few decades and how it has been applied to networks in a number of fields such as automotive and home networking. Large local clusters (nodes have several common neighbours) and narrow distance (average difference between two nodes) distinguish the two features of small world networks. Small world networks are promising candidates for communication networks as traditional data-flow trends of communication networks indicate a huge volume of clustering and a small number of long-distance messages that need to be done rapidly. In this article, characterization of the surface roughness on cross-sectional properties of the 1×3 coupler based on polymer optical fiber (POF) has been conducted and proposed to be optimized and applied on small world communication networks. Fabricated samples will go through a characterization process by observing the performance of POF varied by the surface roughness of the devices. To observe surface roughness of the fabricated device, two major parameters such as excess loss and power efficiency are obtained. The experimental finding shows that surface roughness does not affect the performance of the unit substantially. However, the surface roughness indicates predictable curves in terms of the power efficiency of the low-cost POF coupler when linked to twisting ratio parameter.
