A Demand Side Industrial Aluminum Load Control Scheme based on Output Regulator Theory for Wind Power Smoothing

This paper investigates the short-term wind power fluctuation issues in an actual grid-connected industrial microgrid for aluminum production. As a type of energyintensive load, electrolytic aluminum load (EAL) presents great potentials for smooth the wind power fluctuation due to the large capacity and the load characteristic. In this paper, the detailed equivalent circuit and control model of EAL are discussed. By regulating the power consumption of EALs, a demand side control method based on the output regulator theory is proposed in the paper to smooth the wind power fluctuation. The effectiveness of the proposed control method is validated through the simulation on real-time digital simulator (RTDS) platform. The results demonstrate that the proposed demand control method is able to guarantee the positive dynamic performance of smoothing wind power fluctuation.
