A Shaped Beam Antenna Method Based on Electromagnetic Band Gap Structure

A wideband low-profile antenna is selected for the outdoor application of the small cell base station for Licensed-Assisted Access (LAA), in order to achieve the wide coverage. Moreover, a compact Electromagnetic Band Gap (EBG) structure is proposed to improve the front-to-back ratio of the antenna and make it meet the pattern requirement of the shaped beam antenna (FCC Title 47 part 15.407, 2017), in this paper. The performances of the novel antenna are confirmed by analyzing and comparing the two configurations of the antenna, which is with or without EBG structure. The result shows that the EBG structure helps the antenna to achieve this special pattern requirement.
