Voice and data integration in HDLC environment

The authors present a system model and software and hardware support for voice and data integration (voice packetization, queuing, merging, and signaling). Test results and troubleshooting procedures in the line-error environment are highlighted. Experiments with the length of a voice packet, with a line speed, with an error generator on simulated data and on artificial voice, and with a full laboratory conversational test are also described. Specifications for a voice and data integrator custom IC based on the test results and the collected knowledge are established and presented. The achievable limits with today's technology for the voice and data integration custom IC are up to 144 kb/s, with a line high-speed data rate of up to 160 kb/s.<
