Management of North-Eastem Grid during High Power Order Operation of HVDC-a Case Study

The main objective of this paper is to emphasize on reactive power instability management in AC networks during the high DC power transfer from North-Eastern Regional (NER) grid to Northern Regional (NR) grid of Indian Power System through +/- SOO kV HVDC bi-pole. NER being rich in hydro generation and during high hydro season, power evacuation is facilitated through economical bi-pole HVDC to rest of the Indian grid. The case study shows the relation of reactive power with respect to active power during high power transfer. 1 percent increase/decrease in DC power leads to 1 to 3 percent increase/decrease in reactive power. This paper addresses the challenges to manage reactive power in NER grid and mitigate it with the application of STATCOM.
