Electromagnetic Methodology to Optimize Antenna Isolation in Complex Environments

Electronic devices possess very complex environment with many RF and electronic components. Although full-wave simulations are accurate to model the coupling mechanisms in the device, it can be very time-consuming to optimize the antenna designs for high isolation requirements. In this paper, the closed-form formula of coupling between antennas is combined with minimum number of full-wave simulations to provide a very fast and efficient approach to optimize antenna positions and orientations. The proposed approach is applied to an example where two 2.4GHz antennas are to be mounted in a complex environment. The proposed method can predict the antenna isolations with a reasonable amount of accuracy.
