Simulated and Measured Power Density using Equivalent Currents for 5G applications

In 5G applications commercial devices must be tested to verify compliance of human exposure to electromagnetic (EM) radiation with radio frequency (RF) safety norms [1]. At frequencies above 6GHz, testing comprises evaluating the radiated power density in proximity of the device. This procedure, especially at millimeter-wave frequencies, can require very long measurement times. In order to overcome this limitation a fast technique has recently been presented [2]. By applying the equivalent currents (EQC) method on standard near field (NF) measurements of the device, field and thus power density can be evaluated at any distance in order to verify compliance with RF safety guidelines. In previous studies, validation was performed on a mobile phone [2] and on a Dual Ridge Horn (SH4000) [3]. Results and achievable accuracy have been investigated and validated by full-wave modelling using Computational Electromagnetic tools (CEM). In these investigations, power densities using full wave simulations and EQC were compared in the same CEM tool by importing the measured device as a Huygens box [4]. In this new study, the power density is calculated directly applying the NF/NF transformation from the EQC. Power density results from measured and simulated data of the SH4000 will be analyzed and compared.
