Microwave Radar-based In-Well Sensing

This contribution presents an FMCW radar-based in-well sensing concept. The radar works at 24 GHz and is mounted on an overmoded waveguide like tube, measuring 76 mm in diameter. In order to reduce wall losses and to increase the achievable measuring distance of the radar, an optimized TE11-TE01 mode converter is used. The applicability of the radar-based in-well sensing is demonstrated on a 500 m test rig, build up of single elements measuring 12 m. Here, each joint can clearly be identified within the range measurement using 200 MHz bandwidth.
