Critical Study on the feasiblity of Smart Laboratory Coats

In this paper, a critical study on the smart laboratory coats over the last two decades was conducted. Safety is always the main concern in laboratories. In many accidents such as gases and electric leakage, the laboratory users are unable to notice that they are exposing in invisible danger. Detectors in laboratories mainly concern about the whole inner environment but not the users themselves. Therefore, the project team would like to develop a smart laboratory coat, one type of personal protective equipment to provide a higher level of safety to laboratory users. It will be possible to sense the environmental parameters instantly and continuously, and notice users the surrounding hazards to prevent some common laboratory accidents. As the final goal in the paper, the team would like to install various types of sensors into the laboratory coat. The product should be able to sense different hazardous gases and immediate condition around the users, but at the same time, maintain its intended function and appearance.
