Dry High Voltage Terminations - The development from liquid-filled terminations to today's dry technology

Historically, cable terminations were oil-filled since they were designed to be installed on oil impregnated high voltage cables and the performance of that filling media was well-known from other high voltage apparatus. Nowadays, however, where predominantly polymeric cables (XLPE, EPR) are used, a strong trend towards so-called “dry” high voltage cable accessories is recognizable, mainly because of the advantage, that a potential spillage of the liquid filling media can be reliably avoided. Consequently, it is expected that long-term all cable terminations in the power transmission market will change to a “dry” technology. This paper describes the design of such a cable termination based on a gel filling.
