Islanded distributed generation network using photovoltaic & energy storage systems for a small residential community

In 20th century, most of our energy comes from nonrenewable energy source, coal, petroleum, oil, etc. which are used to make electricity, to heat home and to manufacture products. Because nonrenewable resources cannot be replenished, it can be used up completely. Besides, an estimated 16 percent of the population have little or no access to electricity. One shocking component in this large number is who live far from centralized power generation system: Upwards of 80 percent of sufferers of energy-poverty live in rural areas. A self-sustainable Islanded power system is proposed in the thesis to provide a viable solution of the group cannot access electricity and totally no need of nonrenewable energy. This paper will evaluate the feasibility of developing an islanded power system that is self-sustained through innovative distributed systems as several network topologies will be evaluated. Efficiency, reliability, low maintenance, safety, and flexibility will be considered the primary criteria to determine the most highly efficient power allocation and cost-effective application of photovoltaic and battery systems. Ring network will be designed and analyzed using a power computational software. Furthermore, adequate storage will be a critical component in the integration of an Islanded sustainable residential system. Effective storage provides more control in electricity generation and demand, reducing problems associated with peak power demands. By leveling out increases in the output, a continuous dependable flow of power would become available throughout the day. An inverter and a lithium-ion solid state battery through the Tesla Powerwall will be evaluated for this case. Several additional parameters will be evaluated including, roof construction for PV application, battery size, geographical location, optimal component sizing, and a basic protection / control structure.
