Application of STATCOM to Enable Integration of Solar PV Generation in the Distribution Network

This paper presents a case study of the integration of a proposed 4380kWac addition to an existing 8600kWac solar PV power plant interconnected to two 13.2kV distribution feeders. The Point of Interconnection (POI) to the 13.2 kV distribution network is located towards the end of each feeder, remote from the PSE&G 230kV/13.2kV substation. The site location presents significant challenges such as potential high voltage under light loading conditions and potential for excessive operation of mechanically-switched capacitor banks installed on the feeder. To address these issues, a distribution-level STATCOM is applied in volt-var control mode to provide voltage regulation at the POI. This enables the distribution feeders to support additional PV generation.
