Study of Effective Respiration Through an Anti-Snoring Device Modified to Restrict the Entry of the Novel Coronavirus (SARS-Cov2)

The research in this paper focuses on the development of a prototype of a novel Anti-COVID device which is a modification of an anti-snoring device readily available off the shelf or can be bought online. The device is modified by introducing a leaf of a plant species which acts as a filter in addition to the existing activated carbon filter. The leaf while doing photosynthesis in the presence of sunlight will also generate oxygen so that respiration and breathing can be assisted. The paper presents the analytical calculations of the flow rate through the leaf and explains the amount of oxygen generated during every cycle of respiration due to photosynthesis. The assembly procedure for the proposed device is also explained and can be done by the user at his end. The novelty of the device is that it snugly fits in the nose of the person and moreover eliminates gaps or leaks that typical masks will encounter. Also, introducing the leaf element with a HEPA12 membrane will take the filtration efficiencies of this device close to 100% for particles smaller than 0.3 μm.
