Chipless Strain Sensor using Phase Modulation

Even though Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is nowadays widely applied, there is one issue that keeps preventing its massive adoption: its tag's cost, which is dependant on the cost of its Integrated Circuit (IC). To overcome this difficulty, efforts have been made to develop new chipless RFID tags with identifying and also sensing capabilities. Thus, this paper proposes a chipless RFID tag capable of performing strain sensing. The paper presents several aspects related to the sensor development, such as: material characterization and phase modulations; and presents its results by means of reflected power measurements.
