IoT Building Blocks – Hardware and Software

The basic building blocks of Internet of Things (IoT) are smart thing, IoT gateway, IoT Cloud, IoT analytics, and IoT applications. Smart things have unique digital identities with sensing (and/or actuator) capability, embedded processor, communicator, and/or actuator. Sensor‐acquired data moving toward the IoT Cloud passes through the gateway that pre‐processes the sensor data at the edge. Network infrastructure enables the processing and transmission of data from smart things to IoT Cloud through several homo‐/heterogeneous network devices, i.e. switches, routers, and gateways. Besides the relationship of IoT analytics with IoT Cloud, there exists a strong association between IoT analytics and BigData analytics because IoT data basically have similar Vs of BigData. IoT application through the use of mobile and web interfaces promises to reform living, business, and the entire industry.
