Effect of the biofuel and injection timing on emission of Diesel engine DI

Studies are being currently conducted in the automotive industry worldwide, which are geared towards the reduction of unit fuel consumption and the minimization of the internal combustion engine's harmful impact on the natural environment. One of such research directions is searching for alternative fuels and adapting engines to be supplied with those fuels. The article discusses the effect of the methyl esters of rape seed oil fatty acids and the rape seed oil addition on the emissions of harmful exhaust gas components, i.e. nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, carbon oxides, carbon dioxides, and exhaust gas smokiness. The subject of testing was of an AD3.152 UR self-ignition engine which operated following the load characteristics at n=1600 rpm and three injection timing of 13, 17 and 21 BTDC. The tests were carried out on an engine dynamometer test stand consisting of an eddy-current brake, a control and measuring cubicle, and an Horiba MEXA-1600 DEGR analyzer for the measurement of harmful exhaust gas component concentrations. The degree of exhaust gas smokiness was measured with an AVL DiCom 4000 smokemeter, while the fuel consumption was measured using a 730 fuel dosimeter supplied by AVL.
