Performance Improvement of a Wind Turbine Generator Based on Self-excited Synchronous Generator for Series-connected Wind Power Plants

Performance improvement of a wind turbine generator based on self-excited synchronous generator (SESG) feeding a diode rectifier for series-connected wind power plants is investigated. The steady-state characteristics of the wind turbine generator with a thyristor excitation system have been investigated and it has been shown that since commutation overlap of the diode rectifier affects the thyristor rectifier for excitation, a sufficient operating range cannot be obtained as a wind turbine generator. In this paper, a novel thyristor excitation system with a duplex reactor that is not affected by the commutation overlap of the diode rectifier is proposed. Also, a simulation model of the proposed system is developed, and using the model the steady-state characteristics of the proposed wind turbine generator system are discussed for a laboratory-scale experimental setup. Finally, the effects of parameters of the duplex reactor on the operating range of the system are investigated.
