Efficient Simulation of Bi-periodic, Layered Structures with the T-Matrix Method

We outline a computational method to simulate highly efficient the electromagnetic response from bi-periodic, layered structures. Chiral materials as constituents are perfectly feasible as we expand our solutions into a basis set with well-defined helicity. The individual scatterers that form the metamaterial are entirely described by their T-matrix. The description of the scattering within an array exploits specialized lattice summation methods. The electromagnetic coupling of multiple such arrays of scatterers is computed rigorously using plane wave expansions. With that we can unambigously link the optical response of an entire material to the properties of its individual entity. We show the versatility of the method with two different applications: a study of the resonance of electric dipoles on a square lattice and for the simulation of molecular arrays.
