Abstract:

As the spread of distributed energy resources invisible from a transmission planner is on the rise, possible lack of ride-through capability and miscoordinated trip settings of these new inverter-based resources can lead to reliability issues for bulk power system operation. This paper presents the finding of a study conducted by PJM to understand the reliability impact of DER ride-through and trip clearing time settings of DER connected to its eastern Mid-Atlantic area. The outcome of this study can be used in the formulation of a regional reliability guideline for ride-through and minimum trip clearing time performance during abnormal frequency and voltage conditions for DER connected in PJM's footprint.
