A Numerical Model for the Assessment of the Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

This paper presents a model for the numerical analysis of the TMS procedure. The computational domain, represented by the human head is a heterogeneous volume, with constant and isotropic material properties. Three types of applicators were studied with one and two circular coils placed concerning the occipital lobe. A parametric study is proposed to probe the distribution of the electric current density in the TMS envisaged region of stimulation, and to ascertain the merits and limitations of the applicators. The numerical simulation results are consistent and represent a good start for a magnetic field source optimization in TMS.
