Evaluation of the Protective Performance of the Lightning Arrester for the Lightning Shielding Failure of $\pm 800\mathrm{kV}$ Yibin-Jinhua UHVDC Transmission Line

The detour lighting has become the primary factor affecting the reliability of UHVDC transmission lines, and the surge arrester is one of the most important measures in lightning protection. This paper takes
$\pm 800\mathrm{kV}$
Yibin-Jinhua UHVDC transmission line as example evaluating the performance of the surge arrester based on the lightning simulation. The protective performance of the arrester for two typical towers under single return stroke are calculated and analyzed. The detour lightning resistance level with and without the lighting arrester is compared, and the influence of the tower wave impedance and the grounding resistance is obtained. The simulation results show that with the installation of the arrester, the detour lightning resistance level of the UHVDC transmission lines can be significantly improved. The tower wave impedance has little effect on the detour lightning resistance level which can be ignored. With the increase of the tower ground resistance, the arrester shows slight decrease in peak current and absorbed energy.
