Simulation Study on Mechanical Properties of Carbon Fiber Composite Core for UHV Transmission Conductor

Carbon fiber composite core conductors has many excellent comprehensive properties and is gradually popularized and applied in UHV transmission lines. However, the composite core has strong axial tensile capacity, weak radial shear performance and weak compressive performance. It is prone to damage and failure of the fibers inside the mandrel during the production, transportation and so on. There are hidden safety risks. In this paper, ABAQUS is used to establish a simulation model to obtain the equivalent stress inside the carbon fiber composite core under tension, torsion and winding. The research shows the tensile / torsion of the composite core reaches the critical condition, the interface between the carbon fiber epoxy resin and the glass fiber epoxy resin composite begins to appear interlayer failure. The composite core is destroyed when the maximum shear stress of the composite core exceeds the allowable limit of the glass fiber epoxy resin-based material under the torque. When the composite core is winding, the maximum equivalent stress is concentrated at the boundary between carbon fiber epoxy resin and glass fiber epoxy resin composite material. The research provided a theoretical basis for the design and safe use of Carbon fiber composite core conductors in UHV transmission lines.
