A Performance Evaluation Between Two Industrial Protocols: Mechatrolink III and SSCNET III

Real-time is a challenge facing the industrial communications technology. For this purpose, a large number of protocols have been promoted to enable the goal of real-time control. In the first time, many network types are developed based on CAN. In this time, Ethernet is a trend in modern industrial network. A chosen the best one plays an importance role in engineering. In this paper, the authors present an evaluation on the performance of two networking protocols: Mechatrolink III and SSCNET III. In each network type, the commonly theories are presented. We also consider how each protocol be used on the networked control system. Moreover, each protocol is developed on STM32F207 to evaluate the time communication individually. The cycle time is measured to demonstrate the performance of each network type.
