Winding Simulation of Nb3Sn Rutherford Cable with Different Pitch Angle

Rutherford cable has played a key role in high field accelerator magnets. Nb

Sn Rutherford cable can be used in the next generation of superconducting magnets above 10T which cannot be reached with NbTi strands. Rutherford cable is a multi-strand twisted cable with a two-layers structure with rectangle or trapezoidal cross section. Strands are fully transposed with respect to magnetic field. During cabling, the cable is compressed that assures a large engineering current density. The pitch angle is important for Rutherford cable, which affects the AC loss and bending ability of the cable. In order to evaluate the influence of the pitch angle on the cable winding capacity and establish a reference for a new cable design, finite element method based on ABAQUS have been conducted to simulate the cable winding process.
