Single-Position Method to Measure Range to Mobile Source of Radio Emission

It is discussed that to solve the problems of air traffic control in civil aviation, an aircraft surveillance system has been created using such sensors as primary and secondary radars, multi-position surveillance systems (MPS), automatic dependent surveillance systems of broadcast (ADS-B) and contract (ADS-C) types, multistatic radars (MSPSR). It is noted that at present time, in order to reduce the cost of building ground-based aircraft surveillance systems, as well as to ensure the operation of on-board collision avoidance systems (TCAS), the ADS-B system based on the 1090ES data link is widely used in civil aviation. It is pointed out that the main disadvantage of ADS-B is the low data protection against spoofing. It is proposed to perform a rough verification of ADS-B aircraft position data by determining if the data belong to a certain spatial region limited by the range to the aircraft and the angular sector formed by a weakly directional sector antenna array. A single-position method for measuring the range to a mobile source of radio emission based on measurements of the power and the Doppler frequency shift of the signal received from the aircraft is developed. Expressions for estimation the accuracy of indirect range measurement are obtained. Mathematical modeling is carried out, and it confirms the efficiency of the method.
