Improved Fault-Ride-Through Control Scheme without Requiring Fault-Detection System for a Doubly Fed Induction Generator in a Wind System

This paper investigates the problem of the faul-tride-through (FRT) in a wind energy conversion system (WECS) with a doubly fed induction generator (DFIG). An improved control scheme is proposed that can provide enhanced FRT capability without requiring a fault-detection system. In particular, a FRT control scheme with improved hardware configuration has been proposed that is based on the proper regulation of the stator voltage through the control of power converter of the rotor side. Therefore, for the implementation of the suggested FRT system, a fault-detection system is not required. The battery storage system at the dc-link of the rotor side power conversion system that is normally employed to smooth the generated electric energy and power, it has been properly utilized to enhance the FRT capability. The hardware additions do not considerably affect the cost and do not increase the complexity of the WECS with the suggested FRT control scheme. The effectiveness and the operational improvement of the new topology have been verified with several simulation and experimental results.
