AUV adaptive sampling to delineate subsurface oil plumes

An oil spill can have hazardous consequences for the ocean environment and marine wildlife. It may also bring about significant socio-economic losses for coastal industries, fatal impacts on soils and air quality. Unlike surface oil slicks, subsurface oil plumes are more challenging to track. In general, the use of chemical oceanography is required such as fluorometric measurement of hydrocarbon compounds in the water column [1] .
