RFID Based Smart Hand Hygiene Monitoring System for Health Care Institutions

Lack of hand hygiene is considered to be the single largest cause of healthcare-acquired infections. It is estimated that millions of people around the world are acquiring new diseases when they visit hospitals to cure their illness. Proper hand hygiene practises can be a part of the safer health care goal of the future. Cost effective and efficient hand hygiene compliance system is of paramount importance to ensure hand hygiene among the staff in a health care institution. An efficient solution for hand hygiene compliance and monitoring is developed using Radio Frequency identification. The system is developed to be mounted at two areas- near the patient bed and the hand wash area used by the staff. Thus, the proposed system monitors and notes the hand hygiene practices of the staff. The data is easy to collect into an Excel file and thereby easy to operate using any programming language.
