Improvement of Focusing for Coarse 2D phased Arrays Using the Biaxial Driving Method: A Numerical Study

The biaxial driving method is a technique where a transducer is driven by orthogonal and dephased electric fields, producing controllable steering of the ultrasound beam with a single-element transducer. We present a numerical proof-of-principle study on how this technique can be applied to improve the focusing of a coarse-type 2D phased-arrays. We hypothesize that the 3D-steering capabilities per transducer element can translate into an improvement of the degree of focusing of sparse-type arrays.
