Breast cancer hyperthermia using a grid array applicator

In this paper, a technique for noninvasive microwave hyperthermia treatment of breast cancer is proposed. The system uses a wide band and compact microstrip grid antenna array to raise the temperature of a tumor to therapeutic values while maintaining the healthy tissues at normal body temperature. The proposed antenna array operates at a resonant frequency of 2.45 GHz and a reflector is used below the antenna array for gain enhancement purpose. The array is placed in front of a breast model and the required temperature rise for hyperthermia was attained within 10 minutes. Results for the power density distribution, Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) and thermal analysis in the breast are presented.
