Distributed control of Islanded Microgrids Based on Battery SOC in Disaster situations

Small scale power systems such as Microgrids/mini-grids/nano-grids continue to gain popularity due to their gradually reducing cost and time to install. For countries like Japan that are historically disaster-prone, we are considering Microgrids as a solution for energy security. Following previous research from our laboratory, we explore the operation and management of the state of charge (SOC) of batteries an Energy management system (EMS) tool for Photovoltaic power generation (PV), and Storage battery for power systems in cases of microgrid islanding due to disaster. We introduce smart switches that disconnect microgrids from the radially distributed grid when there is no supply in a disaster situation, forming multiple microgrids in the network. The resulting microgrids are then controlled through battery SOC management and maintain prolonged emergency supply until services can be restored. The simulation is performed in MATLAB / Simulink Simscape Electrical.
