An FSS Based Stop Band Filter for EM Shielding Application

In this paper, a single layer frequency selective surface (FSS) having band stop characteristics is presented. It achieves at-least 39 dB attenuation to offer effective shielding in the frequency band of 8.7 GHz to 14.8 GHz (fractional bandwidth of 50%). The proposed FSS (circular shaped with etched square) is printed on in-expensive FR-4 (lossy) substrate having small unit-cell dimension 6.25 x 6.25 mm

. The proposed FSS also offers identical results for both transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) incident fields. Furthermore, the proposed structure is polarization independent and angular stable against variation in incident E-field up to 75

. The angular stability, size compactness and wideband operation make it strong candidate for electromagnetic (EM) shielding application.
