Analysis challenge of interference on the coexistence performance of a wanted radio signal

Modern vehicles support not only the simple broadcast radio system but also include complex head unit systems featuring Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and cellular connectivity based on 2G/3G/4G. The 5G standard will also be integrated into the car in future iterations. The requirements for ensuring high performance and robustness of the wireless communication systems in modern connected vehicles are significantly greater compared to systems from even a couple of years ago. The RF environment inside and outside of the car is becoming increasingly complex with the large-scale adoption of more connected devices in our daily lives. Most consumer electronic products are supporting some kind of wireless connectivity standard. This increases the amount of RF interference sources that the infotainment devices need to withstand. The interference signal properties vary vastly and it depends on the data rate, bandwidth, modulation type and the spectral position. The characterization of the influence, in terms of packet error rate or BLER that the unwanted signal types have on the wireless services of an automotive infotainment device is documented in this paper. The paper also discusses the measurement challenge, method used to increase interference mitigation efficiency and its consequences from a system integrator point of view.
