Contribution of Converter-fed Loads to Grid Frequency Control in Islanding Scenarios

Conventional loads make an essential contribution to grid stability by their inherent behavior to changes in voltage and frequency. This load self-relating effect is decreased as conventional loads are more often replaced by converter-fed loads. Correlations between active and reactive power consumption and changes in voltage and frequency are lost. Additional load control may also enable converter-fed loads to contribute to grid stability. By this grid-supporting load control, the active power consumption is changed according to the grid frequency. This paper investigates the contribution of converter-fed loads to grid frequency control in islanding scenarios. The evaluation is done for different shares of loads: resistive loads, induction machines and converter-fed loads w/ and w/o grid-supporting control.
