The Characteristic Analysis of A-CAES plant with the Virtual Synchronous Generator Function

A virtual synchronous generator (VSG) structure for the adiabatic compressed air energy storage system (ACAES) is proposed and its feature is studied through dynamic simulations. The VSG focused on the synchronous machine inertia only and it is constructed referring Heffron-Phillip's model. The most characteristic point is that the VSG doesn't use measured power but estimate the synchronism power by the Heffron-Phillip's model. Then the stable VSG is realized by grid connected inverter control. The feature is examined by the simulations. A-CAES VSG is found to have 2 functions that is instantaneous inertia compensation (spinning reserve) by the generator rotating energy and grid electricity supply-demand gap compensation for seconds to hours (Load frequency control: LFC) by stored compressed air. Furthermore, easy handling is achieved for LFC operation thanks to the screw-type compressors and expanders.
