Design and Analysis of a High Saliency Transverse Flux Machine with a Novel Rotor Structure for Traction Applications

A high saliency Transverse Flux Machine (TFM) with a novel rotor structure for traction application is proposed in this paper. The proposed topology has a double stator and a single rotor. For the stator, E shaped core and the concentrated windings are used. An axial airgap is used in the proposed topology, which helps in improving the torque density of the machine. A novel rotor structure is proposed where the magnets are in an orthogonal direction to the rotation of the rotor and core materials are placed in between two adjacent rotor magnets. In the design process, key parameters of the machine are first locally and then, globally optimized to obtain the maximum output torque. Proposed machine's performance is compared with the non-salient E-core TFM and the conventional flux concentrating E-core TFM. 3D Finite Element Analysis (FEA) is used to design and analyze the proposed machine. Validity and effectiveness of the proposed TFM topology are proved by the simulation results.
