Investigating the feasibility of using Video Lecture Capturing as a teaching and learning tool: A case of a rural university in the Eastern Cape, South Africa

Video Lecture Capturing (VLC) has become an increasingly important part of the e-learning content portfolio. These are widely used video resources for e-learning and preparing students for a virtual classroom set-up and these are the most commonly used technology as a teaching and learning tool. In this study the researchers sought to solve an observed problem of high failure rates in technical modules in the department of Information Technology by investigating the feasibility of using VLC as a teaching and learning tool in a rural university in South Africa. The researchers investigated the perceived attitude of students towards VLC by implementing VLC in an experiment set-up and allowing students to reflect on their usage experience. The results indicated that the VLC can be a useful teaching and learning tool for student performance improvement though they may be hampered by the unavailability of resources and poor IT infrastructure which could drive down adoption of VLC and by extension affect the pioneering of other e-learning technologies. The researchers propose a substantial investment be made in VLC systems in order for the students to enjoy the envisaged benefit of their usage.
