Reduction of Energy and Power Losses in Distribution Network Using Energy Storage Systems

Energy storage systems (ESS) are most often used as a backup, or additional power supply in times of power shortage, but today, in addition, their role in regulating power flows is becoming more frequent. Therefore, this paper discusses the possibility of reducing energy and power losses and improving the efficiency of the distribution network using ESS. Optimal charge and discharge power of ESS, as well as their location in the distribution network will be determined by metaheuristic optimization methods of particle swarm optimization (PSO) and genetic algorithm (GA). Standard IEEE18 distribution network was used as a test network, and the obtained results of computer simulations done in Matlab software package, presented at the end of the paper, were used for verification.
