Efficient Java/sup TM/ monitors

In most real-world systems, objects vastly outnumber threads. This paper shows how this characteristic can be used to implement efficient Java/sup TM/ monitors in a way that reduces the number of monitors needed, so that it is equal to the number of threads, while fulfilling the Java/sup TM/ synchronized semantics. Some additional benefits related to priority inheritance and hierarchical resource locking are also briefly explored.
