Comparative Analysis between Direct Torque Control and v/f Control for Electric Vehicles

Rise in concern over increase in pollution and global warming has forced human society to move for alternative solution in automobile industries, which is towards electric vehicles (EVs). In EVs, motor drive control plays a major role and induction Motor based drive is more suitable for EV. This paper focuses on the comparison of two different types of induction motor drive, scalar voltage frequency (v/f) control and vector Direct Torque Control (DTC) for EV applications. A vehicle model is developed in MATLAB Simulink using real life vehicle parameters to generate a realistic speed-torque load profile which is used as motor input to compare both the drives for EV applications in terms of speed response, torque ripples, energy and power flow. The results of both the drives are discussed and it reveals the advantages of DTC in EV application in terms of range and power over v/f control.
