Wireless Brain Machine Interface (BMI) System (Review & Concept)

The recent advances have enabled us to excel in the field of Brain-Machine-Interface (BMI). BMI offers people to control their robotic arms with mind. The BMI system has a brain wave decoder that maps a neural signal in to a kinematic function. The brain activities are being monitored by using various monitoring techniques which includes invasive, minimally-invasive and non-invasive monitoring systems. These techniques focuses on the specific cortical areas to get the brain electrical activities by deploying the implantable Micro/Nano chips. In this article, we have presented a complete wireless BMI system (end-to-end) created on existing work and literature review performed in our Wireless Identification and Sensor Lab. That offers a feasible system to control the muscles and communicate with the robotic body parts of paralyzed patients by using their neural wave activities. In our proposed system the implanted Microelectrocorticography (μECOG) helped us to view the real-time patterns of the neural activities with the help of electrode arrays. The μECOG requires placing the electrode arrays on the cortex under the scalp through implantation. The time frequency method is used to detect different signal features of particular behavioral activity of brain i.e. Voice Activity Detection (VAD). Our proposed BMI system is composed of the implanted μECOG with wireless rectenna system, data acquisition and wireless communication unit. Wireless transmission unit with UWB/Wifi/ZigBee is used for communication between brain and specific robotic body parts. The state-of-the-art above mentioned BMI system would be rightly transformative and would facilitate paralyzed patients with power efficient wireless BMI system.
