Electric Field and SAR Estimation for Multiple Wireless Device Usage in Capsule Environment

In this study, we investigate the use of wireless devices in a capsule environment having a seated human phantom present to represent the scenario of a manned vehicle/spacecraft on a mission with a long duration. We focus on two parameters, namely the electric field distribution and the specific absorption rate (SAR). Then, we compare the values obtained when the human phantom model is seated in a real-sized cross section of a small cylindrical capsule. The wireless devices are cell phones that are held to the ear of the phantom model in order to simulate the scenario in which persons may be talking in flight. The results indicate that the peak local SAR is less than the values recommended by the International Commission on Non-ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP). Further, the electric field strength distribution may be useful to determine the effect of electromagnetic interference on electronic equipment placed at different locations within enclosed areas.
