Architectural Framework, Research Issues and Challenges of Network Function Virtualization

Network Function Virtualization (NFV) is a new networking paradigm, enabling network innovation through virtualization of traditional hardware-based network functions in the form of virtual network functions. NFV is used to virtualize the network functions by decoupling the software implementation from the dedicated hardware. Moreover, NFV is gaining a lot of momentum from network operators by implementing the software version of a hardware appliance called Virtual Network Function (VNF) on commodity and general-purpose servers. Additionally, it helps to reduce both capital cost (CAPEX) and operating costs (OPEX) with the help of virtualization. But, NFV is still in a nascent stage with issues that need to be addressed for the development of an efficient network. The motivation behind this work is that for the development of an efficient, agile, and flexible network system, NFV technology may prove to be a key enabler. In this paper, we discuss the different stages for the development of NFV and NFV architecture along with sequence flow diagram among various components. The research challenges in adoption of this technology are also presented. This will help researchers to conduct useful research in this promising area.
