Design and application of energy storage for electrical multi-drive systems with fluctuating load : on the example of a storage and retrieval machine

This paper presents an answer to the problems of a volatile power grid for the safe operation of industrial plants. Alternative to a regenerative converter the braking energy of a movement is buffered by an electrical energy storage (EES) without additional distortion of the grid voltage. At the same time, the EES also ensures the function of uninterruptible power supply of the drive system in volatile grids. The novel way of using the storage to even out the grid power with fluctuating load profiles allows a reduction of the installation rating or the operation on weak grids. The results are design rules for EES systems.
