Radar Pulse Compression Methods Based on Nonlinear and Quadratic Optimization

This article addresses the problem of radar pulse compression. First, a matched filter at the receiver is assumed and a method to design a transmit waveform characterized by an autocorrelation function with a narrow mainlobe and low sidelobes is proposed. After that, a mismatched filter is considered and a method to design the optimum linear filter receiver is proposed. In both cases, the pursued objectives are minimum sidelobe energy and peak level through a strategy based on quadratic and nonlinear optimization. In this article, we focus particularly on the case of ground weather radars, where the problem of pulse compression is particularly challenging.
