Characterization testing of Hughes 702 solar array

The first Hughes 702 satellite was launched in December 1999. As the largest, most powerful commercial satellite ever launched, it is powered by its unique solar array, using Spectrolab's dual junction GaInP/sub 2/-GaAs-Ge solar cells and the first commercial use of a trough concentrator design. Planar arrays using dual junction solar cells have been extensively characterized at standard insolation intensities, but several features unique to the Hughes 702 array required additional characterization. Therefore, a comprehensive characterization program was performed on all components of the array to assure an accurate prediction of on-orbit performance. The thin-film concentrator underwent full qualification to characterize its performance over a 15-year life. Solar cell performance characteristics were extended to the hotter temperature requirements of the concentrator environment. The database and power prediction methodology are validated by preliminary on-orbit telemetry data.
